Hi, and welcome to the internet fax to email forums!
It is sometimes hard to compare rates between per-page and per-minute plans because it usually depends on how many pages the fax you are sending is. A fax usually takes at least a minute to make the initial connection and send the first page, but pages sent after that tend to take less than a minute per page. The hard part is that it usually varies greatly depending on the speed of the connection and the hardware on the receiving end.
From the Faxage website FAQ:
Q: How long will a page take to transmit?
A: This depends on the complexity of the page as well as the speed and compression capabilities of the Fax machine that FAXAGE is receiving from and sending to. In a best-case scenario, where the page is simple and the remote machine is a high-end machine with capabilities similar to our equipment, pages can go across in under 10 seconds a page. An average estimate is about 30-45 seconds per page, taking in to account the one-minute call minimum. [and 6-second increments thereafter]
Hope that helps!

Yes Cody is right, it really depends on what kind of documents you are sending.
I still prefer by the "pages" because you don't need to guesstimate your cost as opposed to by the "minute". Also a normal fax machine (not high end) would need almost a minute to receive a regular document but will probably take a couple of minutes if its really an extensive page of if there's an image included.

On the other hand, though, most of the 'by the page' services aren't really 'by the page' in our experience ... if a page takes more than a minute, they'll just bill you for another page. The six-second increment after the one-minute minimum per call on FAXAGE is a better deal in that scenario.
